There was a point in time of late when the South Carolina Gamecocks were knocking on the door among the top programs in the nation. Under former head coach Steve Spurrier, South Carolina reached new heights and was a solidified top 15 program. A trip to a College Football Playoff (or BCS National Championship Game prior to 2013) seemed realistic for the Gamecocks back then.

However, it’s more difficult for South Carolina to rack up the wins in the SEC East now with the rise of the Georgia Bulldogs. Even the Mizzou Tigers held a significant edge over the Gamecocks for two straight SEC East Titles. In 2013 and 2014, South Carolina was a favorite to take the crown in the SEC East.

South Carolina just finds itself playing second fiddle to someone either in its home state or in the SEC East at any point in time since the turn of the century. Mizzou, Georgia, and the Florida Gators owned an edge over them in the SEC East for a while. Now, Clemson holds the edge in the massive in-state rivalry played on an annual basis.

Under the direction of head coach Will Muschamp, South Carolina could stay as a contender in the SEC East. But, Muschamp isn’t the answer for this program if it wants to get back to the point it was at under Spurrier. The fact that South Carolina has no national titles and only one conference title (1969 in the ACC) in program history makes the fan base yearn more.
