Kansas Football: 5 reasons Les Miles should be Jayhawks’ next head coach
3. Defense
A word not spoken in any louder than hushed tones in Big 12 circles, defense. It’s a pass-happy league that’s paraded a long list of stud quarterbacks. Teams like Texas and West Virginia have proven that even the most marginally effective defensive units can create enough value to stay in games.
The offensive side of the ball is a bit of a mystery with Miles. There’s no telling what that’s going to look like, who’s going to run the show and how quickly Miles will be able to adjust to the fast pace of the new conference. Defense, though, shouldn’t be an issue. From his beginnings at LSU til his departure, that’s been the side of the ball that Miles has excelled at implementing.
During Miles’ last five complete seasons at LSU the Tigers finished No. 2, No. 8, No. 15, No. 19 and No. 25 in total defense from 2011 to 2015, respectively. Playing second fiddle to the Alabama Crimson Tide, Miles stood toe-to-toe with the nation’s gold standard and matched his mastery on the defensive side of the ball.
