Clemson Football: 3 takeaways from comfortable win over Duke
By Dana Becker
1. Daniel Jones better off returning for senior year
In recent weeks, there has been talk of Daniel Jones being a future high NFL draft pick assuming he decides to declare early and leave for the pros. But with a good base at Duke and a strong group of coaches, Jones is better off sticking it out.
Sure, this might not be the deepest of quarterback classes. And maybe next year he’ll get lose in the shuffle, but as someone who has failed to complete 60 percent of his passes in any of the past three games, Jones still has plenty of room to grow.
He’ll need some work over the final two games to reach the 2,836 yards he had as a freshman, or even the 2,691 from his sophomore campaign a year ago. Against Clemson and its loaded defense, Jones struggled, completing under 56 percent of his throws and failing to reach the 200-yard mark.
This was also the second time he didn’t throw a touchdown, and the seventh game in which he didn’t reach the 250-yard mark. Jones has plenty of natural talent and quarterback skills, but another year under David Cutcliffe would benefit him greatly.
