2019 NFL Mock Draft: Projected first round after Week 12
By Dana Becker
The run on defensive players shows you that NFL teams are starting to realize they need to shore up that side of the ball to make an immediate impact on the standings. After acquiring quarterback Josh Allen last year, the Buffalo Bills grab the preseason No. 1 draft pick this year in Ed Oliver.
The 6-foot-3, 292-pound defensive tackle from Houston has missed a handful of games this year with a knee injury. He also caused some negative headlines for himself, his coach and his school when he reacted to having a jacket ripped off him this past week during a game he did not play in by head coach Major Applewhite.
Teams, especially in college football, first took note of Oliver in 2016 when he recorded 22 tackles for loss and knocked down six passes as a freshman. Oliver secured American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors last year with 16.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks with 73 total stops from his interior lineman position.
Buffalo’s Kyle Williams isn’t getting any younger, but he still remains a solid force inside alongside former Utah standout Star Lotulelei, who the Bills acquired in free agency from Carolina. Oliver is the type of player who can make an immediate impact and become a standout starter for the next decade.
