Texas A&M Football and Texas should be playing on Thanksgiving Day. Every year that goes past without this Lonestar rivalry is a waste.

Every Thanksgiving should have three F’s: food, family and football. Okay, some of the family could be done without and even a few side dishes spared, as long as we get a few hours of pigskin and an empty couch the majority of football fans around the country will be alright.

Not in Texas, though. That’s because the state’s marquee rivalry has gone game-less for nearly a decade and counting. When Texas A&M left for the SEC their standing Turkey Day meeting with the Texas Longhorns was put on “temporary” hiatus. Both programs have cycled through head coaches since then and we’re no closer to having the game restored.

At this point it doesn’t even matter who was right, which side should say sorry first or what circumstances would be acceptable for a renewed rivalry contest. One way or another, this game needs to happen.

There are NFL fans who are content to watch the Cowboys in the afternoon after their Turkey. SEC fans will gladly watch the Egg Bowl between Ole Miss and Mississippi State later that night, but Aggies and Longhorns must now wait until Saturday to see their respective teams take on the LSU Tigers (whom the Aggies have yet to beat) and the Kansas Jayhawks (sans Les Miles).

Internet bickering is getting old. Recruiting ranks and transitive wins aren’t as exciting as the real thing. Whether by goodwill or state-mandate, the Aggies and the Longhorns need to bury the hatchet and knock heads on the gridiron soon. Until then it’s time to make this same plea year after year after year.
