3. Parity is good, but too much parity is a mess

9-3 Washington is on to the Pac-12 Championship Game where they’ll meet Utah, who sits at 8-3 prior to their Rivalry Week game with BYU. Six losses in the conference championship game is bad news for the conference. There are a few title game berths still to be clinched, but the Pac-12’s loss total will be one of the highest.

Two games separate the top four teams in the Pac-12 South and two games separate the top four teams in the Pac-12 North. That’s indicative a conference that’s drowning in mediocrity.

It’s often said in college football anyone can beat anyone on any given Saturday. Generally, that’s true, but it comes with a massive caveat. Teams like Alabama and Clemson and even Notre Dame are going to beat most everybody the majority of the times they take the field. Too many chiefs makes for a little drama (just look at the ACC Atlantic), but too many indians makes for an uninteresting product.

An 11-1 Washington State team with a shot at the College Football Playoff would have made for a compelling narrative in the Pac-12 Title Game. Now it’s a pair of imperfect teams playing for much less tantalizing payout. That’s bad for the conference and bad for college football fans.
