College Football Playoff Rankings 2018: Top 25 projections for Week 14

West Virginia had an opportunity to reach the Big 12 championship game when they hosted No. 6 Oklahoma on Black Friday. The two teams traded punches all night long in Morgantown, but once the dust settled the Sooners emerged with a 59-56 victory. Dana Holgorsen’s crew was unable to earn a trip to Arlington, as they finished the regular season with an 8-3 record.
Will Grier did his best to keep the Mountaineers in the contest on Friday night. The West Virginia quarterback finished 32-of-49 for 539 passing yards with four touchdowns and no picks and added a rushing touchdown. But Grier also coughed up two fumbles over the course of the evening, both of which were returned for touchdowns by Oklahoma defenders Caleb Kelly and Curtis Bolton.
Without the Big 12 title game to prepare for next week, Holgorsen’s squad is now left to wait and see where they land in the bowl pecking order. Where they end up in the final College Football Playoff Top 25 (as well as whether Texas or Oklahoma wins the Big 12 championship) will help determine whether they have a shot at landing one of the at-large spots in a New Year’s Six bowl.
