3. Everybody wins

Both schools wanted the opportunity to play a 12th game this season, but it’s no secret Virginia Tech needed the game more than Marshall. That gave the Thundering Herd some leverage and they used it well. In addition to the game played between the two schools on Saturday, Virginia Tech agreed to play a home-and-home series with Marshall in the near future.

Marshall will host Virginia Tech in 2023 and the two will play again in Blacksburg in 2024. That secures an additional payout for Marshall, who earned $300,000 to play the Hokies this year, and a rare home game against a Power 5 opponent for the Thundering Herd.

Having Virginia Tech at Joan C. Edwards Stadium will be the game of the year for Marshall who will have a better chance at pulling off an upset on their own field. It might be improbable, but Virginia Tech fell to Old Dominion, another Conference USA team, which was winless on the season prior to hosting the Hokies and walking away with a stunning upset.
