3. One bad loss shouldn’t counteract three big wins

Ohio State dropped a road game to Iowa in Kinnick Stadium a year ago and watched the committee keep them outside of the Top 4. The same circumstances are present this season. The Buckeyes went on the road and got bounced, forcefully by the Purdue Boilermakers and recently sought after head coach Jeff Brohm.

That’s bad, but it’s not like Texas has been all that impressive this season either. The Longhorns are 9-4, roughly two games better than the Boilermakers with marquee wins over Oklahoma and… Iowa State? They beat Kansas by a touchdown on rivalry week and escaped with one score victories over Baylor, Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Tulsa. Texas has the brand name, but they’ve been massively underwhelming this season.

The Buckeyes had a close escape against Maryland; Texas lost. Maryland didn’t qualify for a bowl, Purdue did. Is the Texas loss worse than the Purdue loss? No, but it’s concerning.
