2019 NFL Mock Draft: Projected first round after the college football season
Atlanta’s pass rush has been formidable the last two seasons, as they used clever playcalling and strong edge rushers to make the Super Bowl two years ago.
Although they came up short in one of the most historic collapses in NFL history, the talent still made enough plays to keep them in contention for another Super Bowl run last year.
This season that seems to be non-existent, as the defensive line is playing inconsistently as Atlanta has struggled to a 4-7 record. The Falcons will look to improve their play from the unit by drafting Jefferey Simmons out of Mississippi State.
There are character issues with Simmons, but his talent may make him worth the risk at such a high spot.
Simmons could lock up first team All-American honors as he has 15.5 sacks to go along with 59 tackles. He can’t be blocked one on one by SEC caliber offensive lineman, and his skillset should transition well to the league.
As good as Simmons is getting to the QB he has been very effective in stopping the run, as the Bulldogs are giving up only 104 rushing yards per game this season.
I don’t see the Falcons going for another positional need at this spot but if the price is right they could trade down with a team desperate to grab a quarterback.
