3. USC

USC just made the biggest hire-to-date in college football’s 2018 coaching carousel with the addition of Kliff Kingsbury as offensive coordinator, but he alone isn’t going to return the Trojans to their glory days: Urban Meyer would be that hire.

Can you imagine Meyer coaching in the Pac-12 now with the athletes he demands? He’d force everyone on the East coast to actually stay up and watch Pac-12 games, giving weight to a conference that is all but forgotten in college football today.

Most of Meyer’s best recruits are from the East coast – Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio – but with his cache and the sunshine in Los Angeles, that’s a perfect recipe for dominant recruiting classes. Everybody always asks, “Why don’t more kids go to UCLA/USC?” Because most kids like to win, and there’s no guarantee it’ll happen with the current products at those programs.

Current-Trojans head coach Clay Helton is finishing his fourth season at the helm of the program, sporting a combined record of 32-17. And while he’s produced two 10-win seasons, their 2018 record of 5-7 is unacceptable. Adding a brilliant offensive mind in Kingsbury is a short-term move. Could Meyer be a long-term solution for the once-storied program?
