Cure Bowl 2018: 3 reasons to watch Tulane vs. Louisiana
By John Scimeca
1. Tulane is making a rare postseason appearance
The Green Wave doesn’t go to many bowls. For only the second time since 2002, Tulane is going bowling, and the futility of the past 16 seasons makes this year’s season-ending effort against Navy (guaranteeing a sixth win) all the sweeter for Green Wave fans.
In the 16-year stretch between 2002 and now, Tulane has suffered 11 seasons of eight or more losses. Rumors abounded at certain points that university brass was considering a move to the Division I-AA (now FCS) level, or even lower.
Former New Orleans Saints assistant Curtis Johnson led Tulane to a 2013 appearance in the New Orleans Bowl, where the Green Wave fell to, wait for it, the Ragin’ Cajuns. Louisiana pulled out a 24-21 win in front of a raucous crowd and went on to win several more New Orleans Bowl games.
Tulane’s football team recently moved into an on-campus stadium after competing in the Superdome along with the Saints for several decades. The move, in addition to third-year head coach Willie Fritz, has reinvigorated a beleaguered fan base. A winning record to finish the 2018 season would be crucial if Tulane hopes to carry any momentum into 2019.
