Bahamas Bowl 2018: 3 reasons to watch Toledo vs. FIU
By Zach Bigalke
3. Will there be a return touchdown on a punt or a kickoff?
Both Toledo and Florida international have been reliable performers with their return games this season. FIU ranks eighth nationally in punt return average, and Maurice Alexander has taken one punt return to the house heading into their bowl game. The Panthers could get another punt return score from Alexander.
Or maybe it will be Toledo’s opportunistic group that doesn’t put up great averages but has proven capable of busting through for backbreaking touchdowns on returns. Diontae Johnson leads the way with one kick return score and one punt return touchdown this year.
Two other players, Reggie Gilliam and Cody Thompson, have also returned punts for scores. Gilliam also has a talent for blocking kicks. He is currently the national leader in blocks, having tamped down four attempts this season so far. He is definitely a talent to watch in all phases of special teams.
Given the talented return men on both sidelines, Toledo and FIU will try to force touchbacks on their kickoffs. Both teams have issues in their coverage game, especially on punts. Keeping the chains moving will be critical, because either side has speedsters capable of taking it to the house at any point of the game.
