College Football: 5 must-watch under the radar bowls in 2018
1. Camping World Bowl (Friday, Dec. 28)
The details: The Camping World Bowl will be played Friday, Dec. 28, at 5:15 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Mountaineers finished the regular season ranked 20th per the S&P+ with a record of 8-3. The Orange finished up 9-3 and ranked 43rd per the S&P+. West Virginia was three points away from facing the Texas Longhorns in the Big 12 Championship Game while Syracuse was four points away from knocking off the Clemson Tigers.
Why you should watch: West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen’s hair — just kidding. It’s Dana’s sixth-ranked offense per the S&P+. Mountaineers quarterback Will Grier threw for over 3,800 yards while tossing 37 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. Grier lived up to the hype and proved me wrong as I predicted WVU to finish 6-6 on the season. His wide receivers, Gary Jennings Jr. and David Sills V, accounted for 28 touchdowns in the passing game.
The Orange are led by head coach Dino Babers and his version of the Air Raid. Babers’ quarterback the past few seasons at Syracuse has been Eric Dungey. He’s a tough-as-nails type who totaled over 3,200 yards and 32 touchdowns through the air and on the ground. Dungey may not be a big time NFL prospect like Grier but I believe he’ll hang around the NFL because of his grit.
Fun factor: New Year’s Eve party around 10:30 p.m. ET when everyone is just getting buzzed but no one has used the bushes in your front lawn as a toilet yet.
Prediction: West Virginia by 1
