1. No touchdowns in the first half

Two of the stingiest defenses in college football will make life tough on a couple of offenses that struggle to find traction.

UAB’s offense ranks 64th in the nation in yards-per-play at 5.6 yards per. Northern Illinois’ defense ranks 8th in the nation in yards-per-play allowed, giving up just 4.4 yards per.

Northern Illinois’ offense has been one of the worst in the country, ranking 126th at 4.4 yards-per-play. UAB’s defense gives up just 4.7 yards-per-play, good for 22nd in the nation.

It will take some time for either offense to figure out the opposing defense, and both coaches are likely to employ numerous tricks and gadgets to try and spring a big play that could ultimately prove to be the difference in a game where points will be at a premium.

Expect the first half to feature numerous three-and-outs and punts as the offenses feel out the defenses, leading to a low-scoring first half of action that will have neutral observers probably searching elsewhere for their Tuesday night entertainment.

Look for each team to threaten once or twice in the first half, but for each defense to stiffen inside the redzone and hold the opposing team to field goals.

The Huskies give up touchdowns inside-the-20 on a little over 50 percent of opposing offensive possessions, while the Blazers hold a little under 50 percent, meaning the going will be tough for both offenses even when they finally breakthrough to scoring position.

Expect a field goal kicking contest in the first half, with halftime adjustments leading to a touchdown or two in the second half.
