3. Penn State Nittany Lions

Justin Fields was a one-time Penn State commitment before opening his recruitment back up and ultimately choosing Georgia, so you have to figure that James Franklin will be putting on a full-court press to lure the talented QB to State College.

Highly decorated QB Trace McSorley will play his final game for the Nittany Lions in the Citrus Bowl against Kentucky. McSorley was a three-year starter for Franklin in Happy Valley, and he could go to the transfer route in hopes of landing the team’s next starting QB.

Junior Tommy Stevens would be the natural successor, and freshman Sean Clifford impressed in limited action before redshirting (not to mention incoming four-stars Michael Johnson Jr. and Taquan Roberson), but neither are as talented and naturally gifted as Fields.

Penn State could be in position to take over the Big Ten now that Urban Meyer has retired from Ohio State; Jim Harbaugh and Michigan seemed to be the biggest benefactor of Meyer’s departure, but he still hasn’t proven that he can win the Big Ten. Franklin has already captured a conference title in Happy Valley as well as leading them to a pair of New Year’s Six bowl games.

Franklin has recruited well enough and the Nittany Lions bring enough talented guys back next season that they could compete for a Big Ten title and a spot in the playoff if they can properly replace McSorley.

If Franklin isn’t convinced that player is already on the roster, then Fields could make a lot of sense, and could potentially lift Penn State into the playoff for the first time.
