2019 NFL Mock Draft: Dwayne Haskins atop one team’s Christmas list
The Jets’ offensive line has struggled to protect newly-minted franchise QB Sam Darnold, and the results haven’t been pretty. Darnold has the highest interception rate in all of football, and while he deserves a chunk of the blame, he isn’t getting much help from his offensive line or his wide receivers.
Darnold is getting pressured on 33 percent of his dropbacks this season, which is one of the highest rates in the NFL. He’s having trouble enough reading defenses; he’s got no shot when he constantly has pressure in his face. That has to be remedied this offseason.
Alabama left tackle Jonah Williams is the top offensive line prospect in this class if he declares. Williams stepped in as a true freshman and started in Tuscaloosa at right tackle before shifting over to the left side the last two seasons.
Williams is good in pass protection, but he’s also a road grater in the ground game. His ability to help a Jets run game that ranks 30th in the NFL in yards-per-carry would be a welcome bonus.
The Jets will also be on the lookout for a receiver in the draft, but the No. 4 pick is too high for any of the guys available. They’ll likely spend a second day pick on one while also perusing the free-agent market for more immediate solutions, although the pickings might be slim among the available veterans.
