Michigan. Rashan Gary . 6. player. 50. . DE

Rashan Gary isn’t likely to be an elite pass rusher in the NFL, and he might project better as more of a defensive tackle than an end, but he’s undeniably talented. He has the physical tools to develop more as a pass rusher, and while he managed only 9.5 sacks over his 34 games in Ann Arbor, he racked up 23 tackles-for-loss.

His strength in the middle to command double teams allowed the likes of Devin Bush and Chase Winovich to tee off on quarterbacks, helping form the Wolverines into one of the best defenses in the FBS.

The Lions are keenly aware of the hometown product, and happen to have a need for help on the defensive line. Ziggy Ansah will be expensive to retain, and all signs point toward his exit in Detroit. The Lions uncovered a gem in fourth round defensive tackle Da’Shawn Hand, but they’ve been disappointed in the hot-and-cold play of former second round pick A’Shawn Robinson.

Gary would come in and immediately be the most talented player on the line, with the potential to mold into one of the more feared defensive tackles in the NFL.

Regardless of which position they target, Detroit needs an influx of defensive talent as they rank 31st in the NFL in defensive DVOA. They need some young difference makers who can elevate the level of play on that side of the ball.
