Miami Football: 5 holiday wish list items for Hurricanes in 2019
1. An offensive coordinator
What do Miami fans really want for the holidays? An offensive coordinator not named Mark Richt. He took the Miami job stating that he was going to be calling plays for the Hurricanes. I’m not sure if he, nor fans, were aware of how out of touch the former Georgia Bulldogs head coach had gotten. Modern offenses have left what Miami is doing down south behind. With Florida hiring Dan Mullen and the Seminoles luring in Kendal Briles the ‘Canes need a young, innovating, offensive mind calling plays.
I don’t think ‘Canes fans will get their top wish now that hirings and firings have settle around the country. Ole Miss offensive coordinator Phil Longo emerged at UNC, an ACC opponent of Miami’s, with his 12th-ranked offensive scheme. Miami on the other hand finished the regular season with the nation’s 67th-ranked offense. The quarterbacks struggled in 2018 with Perry finishing the season averaging 5.8 yards per attempt, and Malik Rosier threw six touchdowns with five interceptions.
Miami has sunk their program into Richt and he has sunk his program into his hubris. Until Richt decides to give up play-calling Miami will struggle to score. Remember, even coming in at 10-3 a year ago Miami’s offense was only 36th in the country per the S&P+. In 2016, Miami’s offense was 34th.
Without Al Golden’s players the production has plummeted as Richt has had to find his own playmakers and quarterback. A new O.C. could bring a 2019 recruit with him and resurrect the offense, but that wish won’t come true.
