5. Jason Candle

I have written a lot about Jason Candle and potential openings over the past three years and rightfully so. Candle, the current head football coach at Toledo, has kept the Rockets in the national eye after Matt Campbell left for Iowa State. With a 28-13 overall record as head coach at Toledo, Candle has found success with third-tier talent from Ohio. He’s really tried, however, to tap into Florida recruiting by hiring former Hurricanes wide receiver Kevin Beard.

The Rockets scored 40 points per game in 2018 which is 9th in the nation. Toledo started two quarterbacks this season once Mitchell Guadagni went down with an injury. Guadagni was averaging 8.8 yards per attempt with 13 touchdowns and only three interceptions before being lost for the season. Candle’s offense features a pro-style quarterback and a solid running game. Running back Bryant Koback ran for 921 yards (six yards per carry) and 14 touchdowns on the season.

Toledo lacked a defensive presence, however. While the Rockets had the 17th ranked offense per the S&P+ they struggled on defense finishing ranked 95th. Their kicking game was far superior to Miami’s finishing the season 31st which shows an emphasis on program management by the head coach.
