3. Meyer has “retired” before, and it didn’t last long

Health issues have been at the center of both of Meyer’s previous departures from coaching. When he left Florida in 2009 Meyer called his daily grind “self-destructive.” Off-field issues circled around his decision to leave Ohio State, but anyone watching his demeanor on the sideline could tell something was wrong.

A brain cyst was causing Meyer frequent headaches as the stresses of the investigation on social pressures continued to mount. It was time for Meyer to step away from coaching. It was time for his time at Ohio State to come to a close. Both of those things are true, but it doesn’t mean his time coaching major college football has to be over. History says it won’t be.

Meyer had every opportunity to declare his retirement permanent in his closing press conference in December. Instead of putting speculation to bed, he called it a “complicated question“, saying he “believed” he wouldn’t coach again. Nobody’s buying it, and history says Meyer will be back. Notre Dame is the best fit.
