2019 NFL Mock Draft: Projected first round after college football season
The 49ers would also be smart to listen to potential trade offers from the Giants and Jaguars as they look to make a move for Haskins, while also being in contact with the Raiders as well as Jon Gruden hopes to avoid striking out on a top-flight pass-rusher.
If the 49ers stand pat, this pick probably comes down to Quinnen Williams and Kentucky’s Josh Allen. Both guys are tremendous prospects, but I think Williams might check a couple more boxes that makes him a little bit more desirable.
Alabama’s defense as a whole struggled to get stops against a potent Clemson offense, but the one constant on an otherwise shaky defense was Williams in the middle. Despite facing consistent double-teams, he still found his way into the backfield on multiple occasions to pressure Trevor Lawrence or get a tackle-for-loss on a running back.
He managed 1.5 tackles-for-loss in the title game, solidifying himself as a Top-5 pick if the redshirt sophomore forgoes his final two years of eligibility in Tuscaloosa. Williams put up 19.5 tackles-for-loss and eight sacks on the season.
Williams’ brilliance in the middle masked deficiencies on the second level of the Crimson Tide’s defense that finally got exposed by Clemson in Santa Clara. He was a relatively unknown prospect coming into the season after biding his time behind first round pick Da’Ron Payne, but he quickly ascended draft boards thanks to an outstanding season.
