2019 NFL Mock Draft: Projected first round after college football season
Dwayne Haskins has officially declared for the draft, and looks to be the No. 1 QB prospect by a country mile. He finished his Ohio State career in fitting fashion, throwing for 250 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Buckeyes defeated Washington in the Rose Bowl.
Haskins was often the forgotten third QB with all the hype surrounding Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray, but he threw 50 touchdown passes in his lone season as the starter in Columbus, and now moves on to the next level possessing the tools to be a franchise quarterback.
There’s no chance he lasts until No. 6, though. I expect a furious bidding war between the Giants and Jaguars to ensue, potentially even with the Cardinals who sit at No. 1. The 49ers and Jets are more likely to listen to offers, but that could open the possibility of making a move that is ultimately for nothing with the other than jumping ahead by trading for No. 1.
Mocking trades is a bit too messy this early in the process, so I won’t do that here, but I believe it will take a trade by the Giants, Jaguars, or potentially a wildcard like Miami or Washington to land Haskins.
For now, if Haskins is on the board when the Giants pick, I can’t imagine that they would pass on him after passing on a bevy or quarterbacks last year to instead take Penn State’s Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 pick.
Haskins would benefit from a “redshirt” year at the next level, which likely works out perfectly for the Giants’ timeline anyway, as they feel they could be competitive next season with Eli Manning back in the fold for one more ride in the Big Apple.
