5. Oklahoma

Oklahoma was reportedly one of the two finalists for Justin Fields’ potential transfer before the former Georgia quarterback decided on Ohio State. Jalen Hurts might make even more sense than Fields, however, with Hurts having just one year of eligibility left to bridge the gap for a five-star signal-caller heading to Norman in this recruiting cycle.

The Sooner signed five-star QB Spencer Rattler in the early signing period out of Phoenix, Arizona. Rattler chose not to enroll early despite expectations that he would come in and compete for the starting job with rising junior Austin Kendall.

Rattler won’t go through spring practice, putting him behind the eight-ball for next season. That could lead Lincoln Riley to look for a place-holding QB to keep Oklahoma in National Championship contention in 2019 if he doesn’t believe that Kendall is the guy.

Hurts would be an upgrade, and would be a better fit for the Sooners’ offensive system than Kendall is with his dual-threat abilities. He could start next season while Rattler sits back and learns before taking the job in 2020.

Riley and Oklahoma would be obviously appealing to Hurts as the Sooners produced the last two Heisman Trophy winners in Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, both of whom were snagged off of the transfer market from Texas Tech and Texas A&M respectively.

Riley has a proven track record of developing signal-callers. Mayfield was the No. 1 overall pick to the Cleveland Browns last year and enjoyed a phenomenal rookie season. If Murray decided to enter the draft instead of playing baseball as has long been expected, then he would likely be selected in the first round as well despite his slight stature.

Hurts has NFL aspirations, so going somewhere that he can develop as a passer to potentially achieve those dreams makes a lot of sense.
