4. Miami Dolphins

Adam Schefter reported on Sunday that the Dolphins are preparing for a full-fledged rebuild with an eye on drafting one of the top quarterbacks in the 2020 NFL Draft class. The 2020 class is expected to be deep at the position and headlined by Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa.

Miami seems intent on moving on from Ryan Tannehill this offseason after seven years together. If Tannehill is cut with a post-June 1st designation, the Dolphins would save nearly $19 million with his contract carrying $7.9 million in dead money. If he isn’t cut, Tannehill’s cap hit for next season would be $26.6 million. He’s coming off arguably the worst season of his professional career, with his QBR being the lowest he’s posted in his seven years in the league.

Would Kyler Murray’s decision to enter the NFL Draft change the Dolphins’ plans? If they covet Murray enough, they could choose to spend the No. 13 pick on the former Heisman winner instead of waiting around for Tagovailoa or Oregon’s Justin Herbert in next year’s class.

Even with Tannehill out of the picture, the Dolphins aren’t likely to be bad enough in 2019 to land a draft pick high enough to select Tagovailoa or Herbert, which would force them to look into mortgaging future assets to organize a trade-up.

As Schefter notes in his story on the Dolphins’ 2020 strategy, the team needs help on both lines of scrimmage, which will likely be their focus in this draft class. Their pass rush needs a boost with likely losses of Cameron Wake and Robert Quinn via retirement or free agency.

The Dolphins should do their due diligence on Murray anyway. They should work him out and vet him to see if he fits what they are looking for in a long-term franchise quarterback. If they think he can be that guy, it would be foolish to pass on him if he is on the board in hopes that you will draft in a position in 2020 to land a franchise changing player.

Murray could be that franchise altering player, and he could accelerate the Dolphins’ plans for a rebuild.
