3. A tight end’s heart in a lineman’s body

Iowa came into their week nine showdown with Penn State knowing full well they would need to pullout all the stops against the Nittany Lions, as Iowa has yet to beat James Franklin since his arrival in 2014. What would make it a little tough was the weather conditions, it was 40 degrees and pouring rain when the game kicked off, but the Silver Fox wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

Iowa started off the game with a cavalcade of unusual plays. Their first score was a safety off a blocked punt by Dominique Dafney that rolled into the back of the endzone. On Iowa’s ensuing possession, the Hawks drove down and kicked a field goal to make the score 5 (yes, five) to zero. What happened a few possessions later can’t be described in words, but can be believed once you see it a time of twenty.

Kirk Ferentz has been a lot more open to fake field goals over the past few seasons, and while some have been a little prettier, none have been nearly as zany. The man throwing the pass was punter Colten Rastetter, who is also the holder for field goals. On the receiving end? Why that would be the pride of Carroll Keumper High, defensive lineman Sam Brincks.

Brincks, who was a tight end in his prep days at Keumper, turned back the clock for a huge a touchdown which, at the time, seemed to be a foreshadowing for Penn State’s day. While the Nittany Lions did win by a final of 31-24, this play will live much longer than the final score.
