9. player. 16. . WR. Ole Miss. D.K. Metcalf

One of the most intriguing stories between now and April’s NFL Draft will be who emerges as the No. 1 wide receiver. As many as six guys could be in competition for it; what this draft lacks in top-end talent at the position it makes up for in quality depth.

There probably isn’t a guy who is worthy of being selected in the Top 10, but I don’t think the Bills have the luxury of waiting until the second round. That could put them in position to explore trade-down scenarios with teams potentially looking to move up to grab Kyler Murray. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a trade worked out with Washington where the teams swap No. 9 and No. 15 with the ‘Skins potentially throwing in a future first rounder to make it work.

If they stand pat, I still expect they could reach for a receiver. Buffalo isn’t as far away from playoff contention as they appeared coming into the season thanks to a good, young defense. The Bills finished the regular season ranked 2nd in defensive DVOA, allowing them the luxury of reaching for some offensive playmakers with this selection.

I still doubt that Josh Allen is a viable starting QB in the NFL, but Buffalo has to give him a fair shake by surrounding him with talent at receiver. The Bills got productive seasons out of a couple of rookies – 2nd round pick Zay Jones and UDFA Robert Foster. Both of those guys are better suited as complementary pieces, however, so they’ll be on the lookout for a potential No. 1.

His teammate A.J. Brown has received the majority of the draft hype since they came to college, but D.K. Metcalf is the better pro prospect in my mind. He missed the majority of his junior season with a neck injury, but he was off to a torrid pace before the injury. He has the size at 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds and big-play ability that NFL teams covet. A big combine should shoot him up draft boards and cement his spot as the draft’s top receiver.

The Bills might also be in the market for some upgrades on the offensive line, which could put Ole Miss’ Greg Little and Oklahoma’s Cody Ford in play with this pick.
