2. Beating UCLA is always a good way to get in the fan’s good graces.

There are rivalries and then there is what UCLA and USC have put together. These two storied programs really hate each other and it shows every season on the football field as the regular season winds down over at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles. It is one of the more exciting rivalry games of the year and the fact that it happens before rivalry week officially begins gives it an even bigger flair of excitement.

The Trojans were on a three-game win streak against the Bruins, until 2018 happened. Yes, they would give Notre Dame a scare the next week, but the loss to UCLA was the final straw for many people. I mean, the very next game someone paid for a sign asking the Trojan Athletic Department to fire Helton. That kind of speaks for itself. In 2019, this team has to beat UCLA and as we will discuss more in just a second, it can’t be the make or break win for bowl eligibility. It just can’t be.

That game has to be icing on the cake of a great season for Clay Helton. They have to have bowl eligibility locked up for at least three weeks for this to be a win that pushes things over the top for USC. No, a win over UCLA won’t singularly save the job of a head coach at USC. It will simply be an additional thing to add on to a great season. No matter what though, to keep his job this game will be a must win for the Trojans.
