2019 NFL Draft: 10 players who could fall out of the first round
Much like Marquise Brown, Florida State edge-rusher Brian Burns could find himself falling down draft boards due to the rise of others at his position.
Burns has plenty of talent, and a plethora of pass-rushing moves that NFL teams covet. He’s not overly powerful, but he’s typically able to win one-on-one battles with tackles anyway. Where he could struggle, however, is against the run as an edge-setter.
Burns is listed at just over 230 pounds, which could limit his suitors to strictly 3-4 based defenses. Burns’ frame can hold more weight, but unless he can bulk up he will be pushed around if he has to line up with his hand in the dirt. He’s likely going to be relegated to an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme.
Guys like Old Dominion’s Oshane Ximines and Texas’ versatile defensive lineman Charles Omenihu have climbed up draft boards recently, which could knock Burns down a notch or two unless he is able to put together strong performances throughout the pre-draft process.
Burns was one of the lone bright spots in an otherwise forgetful season in Tallahassee with the Seminoles missing a bowl game for the first time in 36 years. Burns put together 15.5 tackles-for-loss and 10 sacks, but he was quiet when it mattered most.
Burns was ineffective in a blowout loss to Clemson and registered only a single sack over the season’s final five games as Florida State went 1-4 down the stretch to miss out on bowl eligibility.
Burns is too talented and too polished as a pass rusher to fall too far, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him picked on the second day after long being considered a first round prospect.
