8. Kyle Shurmur –– Vanderbilt

Kyle Shurmur had an interesting career at Vanderbilt –– mostly because he excelled fairly well in light of the fact that the Commodores are perennially either a mediocre or below average team.

He didn’t fare too well in his first season of consistent game action during his sophomore year, throwing nine touchdowns to 10 interceptions. However, Shurmur turned the tables in his junior and senior seasons.

In the process, he surpassed Jay Cutler for a program-best 5,735 passing yards in his career along with 64 career touchdowns.

While he isn’t exactly first-round material, he definitely has the size and makeup of an NFL quarterback –– at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds.

Perhaps one of the more interesting aspects surrounding Shurmur’s professional potential has to do with the fact that his father, Pat Shurmur, is the head coach of the New York Giants.

In the coming years, the Giants will be exploring options for the successor to two-time Super Bowl quarterback Eli Manning and should Shurmur be a middle-to-late round pick, he could fall in the hands of the Giants –– reuniting the Shurmur with his father.

He most likely won’t make an immediate impact at the pro level, but he has the tools to solidify himself in a position to compete for a roster spot and a backup job for the time being.

Upsides: Size, big arm, stands tall in the pocket under pressure

Downsides: Long release, mobility is limited, completion percentage could be better
