2019 NFL Draft: Top 10 wide receiver prospects, ranked
9. J.J. Arcega-Whiteside –– Stanford
J.J. Arcega-Whiteside had a fast start to his senior season at Stanford before moving on to pursue professional football.
Through the first half of 2018, the 6-foot-3, 225 receiver hauled in eight touchdown catches –– with half of those games being multi-touchdown contests.
Overall, his senior season marked career highs in receptions (63), receiving yards (1,059) and touchdown catches (14). Undoutedly, he was the Cardinal’s top threat as the team’s leading receiver in yards and touchdown receptions.
While his numbers tapered off in the second half of the season from a touchdown catch standpoint, his overall production wasn’t disparaged.
For example, in the final two games of Stanford’s season, Arcega-Whiteside failed to record a touchdown catch but had 109 and 90 receiving yards in those games, respectively.
As a big target, Arcega-Whiteside places himself in a favorable position for his quarterback in order to gain separation from defenders. Even in tight coverage, he finds a way to high-point the football and bring down a catch.
Last season, he was dangerous in the red zone. Often times, he was able to “box out” a defensive back for an easy score. His physical nature could be a key strength for him at the next level.
