2019 NFL Draft: Top 10 defensive line prospects
By Shane Lunnen
Starting off this list is defensive tackle Dre’mont Jones out of Ohio State. Jones is a borderline first round pick but may fall to the second day.
Jones took a redshirt his freshman year but followed it up with three solid seasons. Last year when Nick Bosa went down with his season-ending injury, the Buckeyes relied heavily on Jones. It paid off with his best year as a Buckeye statistically. He ended the year with 43 tackles, 13 for loss, and 8.5 sacks. He also had three fumble recoveries, one for a touchdown, and returned an interception 28 yards for a score against TCU. Not bad for a big guy defensive tackle.
Jones’ biggest pro is his first step off the line. He is an explosive athlete and a force along the interior line. What could drop his draft stock is his lack of presence against the run. At the next level, he may not be a three down linemen but utilized mostly in passing situations. If he bulked up some and worked on his run defense, he would improve his chances at seeing more playing time in the NFL. Jones has too much athleticism to drop too far down team’s draft boards.
