2019 NFL Draft: Top 10 defensive line prospects
By Shane Lunnen
A year ago, many scouts were projecting defensive tackle Ed Oliver to be a potential first overall pick. His stock may have fallen some, but Oliver is still a consensus first rounder.
Oliver was a star in his three seasons at Houston. He became an instant starter his freshman year where he played in 12 games, totaled 65 tackles with 22 of those for loss. Oliver was a first team All-American all three years plus in 2017 he won the Outland Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top interior lineman.
Even though he decided to leave a year early, Oliver finished his college career with an astounding 192 tackles, 53 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, 11 passes defensed and five forced fumbles. All of this while playing only eight games his junior year due to injury. He may be the most decorated defensive player to ever play for the Cougars.
Oliver is listed at 6-foot-3 but he is slightly shorter than his listed height. What Oliver lacks in size, he makes up in his explosiveness off the line. He commanded a lot of double and even triple teams in college and still racked up a ton of tackles. Houston did move him around and an NFL team may do the same, moving him to the end in a 4-3 scheme. Oliver has a ton of talent and the skills to succeed at the next level.
