Georgia’s Deandre Baker is in need of a good showing in Indianapolis to solidify his spot in the first round. If he struggles, he could be in danger of slipping down to day two, or in the very least his spot behind Greedy Williams could be taken from him by Washington’s Byron Murphy. Some already have the Huskies All-American ahead of Baker, and while I’m not yet ready to pull the trigger, I’ll be monitoring the combine proceedings closely.

Baker put together an outstanding senior season in Athens, possessing the ball-skills and competitive toughness that NFL teams covet. Baker does a great job playing the ball in the air, with his experience helping him anticipate when the ball is going to be thrown and where it’s going to be.

Baker doesn’t have as high of a ceiling as Murphy or LSU’s Williams, but he might have the highest floor among draft prospects at corner. He also offers the versatility of playing on the outside or inside as the slot corner, increasing his value with his ability to play multiple spots.

Baker excels in press coverage and does well in zone as well, but some view him as fitting only certain schemes due to his struggles playing off-ball coverage. That could affect him on draft day, but I expect him to still find his way into the first round.

Denver at No. 10 is likely the highest I can see Baker rising in the first round, with his floor probably being the Eagles pick at No. 25.
