2019 NFL Draft Big Board: Top 25 Prospects entering NFL Combine
Michigan’s Rashan Gary is a polarizing prospect in that he has all the physical tools in the world, but he doesn’t have the production to back up his hype. In 34 games with the Wolverines, Gary produced 23 tackles-for-loss and 9.5 sacks, numbers far below many of his peers who are fighting for top positions in the draft.
Gary is undeniably talented, but his motor runs hot-and-cold, with him consistently taking plays off throughout games and rarely giving maximum effort throughout a game.
On the other hand, Gary has the versatility to play in a variety of schemes. He’s never going to be a feared pass rusher, but he’s an excellent edge-setter when lined up at defensive end. He’s also great at shedding blocks and making tackles.
His best value at the next level will be as a three-technique defensive tackle where he can occupy space in the middle and eat up multiple blockers, allowing for others to rack up the highlight reel plays. He still offers tremendous value, even if he doesn’t have the same eye-popping numbers as some of the other defensive line prospects.
I don’t see Gary challenging for a spot in the Top 5, but he could easily find his way into the Top 10. The Lions at No. 8 would be a nice fit for him, and the Broncos would likely be intrigued if he slipped to them at No 10. It’s possible that a run on more dynamic edge-rushers sends Gary slipping down draft boards, in which case the Falcons would be happy to end his slip at No. 14.
