2019 NFL Draft Big Board: Top 25 Prospects entering NFL Combine
LSU’s Greedy Williams remains the draft’s top cornerback, but that spot isn’t secure with the emergence of Washington’s Byron Murphy and Georgia’s Deandre Baker nipping at his heels.
Williams is a ball-hawking, shutdown corner who burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman in Baton Rouge in 2017 by picking off six passes. His numbers were down in 2018 as he ended up with only two interceptions, but that had more to do with quarterbacks choosing to ignore his side of the field than a slide on his part. Much like Murphy, Williams has outstanding closing speed that prevents him from ever really being out of a play even if a receiver gains a step on him.
Williams has great size and cover skills that make him a coveted NFL prospect, but there are a few concerns on tape that could be potential red flags. The biggest issue for Williams is that his effort level isn’t always there, particularly when he is tasked with making plays against the run. He has rarely seemed interested to join the fray in that regard, something he will have to be broken of at the next level.
The effort issues should be ironed out at the next level because he won’t be able to get by on sheer talent anymore. There will be guys sitting behind him who will take his spot if he doesn’t give a more consistent effort across the board. When he’s dialed in, he’s an elite talent at the position, one who could eventually be one of the very best corners in the league.
His ceiling looks to be Tampa Bay at No. 5, with the absolute doomsday scenario seeing him fall to No. 20 when the Steelers pick.
