2019 NFL Draft: Top 10 late round sleeper picks, ranked
5. David Montgomery – Iowa State, Running Back
After two strong seasons in Ames, Iowa State running back David Montgomery decided to leave school early to pursue a professional football career. Montgomery earned the accolades of being named to the First-Team All-Big 12 and a First-Team All-American by Pro Football Focus in 2018, building off a successful sophomore campaign.
In 2018, he bested his sophomore season totals with 1,216 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns on one less carry than the previous season.
The area where Montgomery seems to impress the most is with his active footwork. Instead of running right into contact to spoil a play, he maneuvers himself to an open lane while using nifty agility.
His vision also is a key component of his game as he reads a defender and adjust accordingly to avoid being taken down.
Montgomery was relied upon a lot throughout the past two seasons (515 carries in two seasons), so there shouldn’t be any qualms about his stamina or status as a potential three-down back. His quickness, ability to avoid the defense and resiliency in staying on his feet will make Montgomery a steal of a pick in the mid to later rounds of the draft.
