NFL Draft: Top 25 prospects from the Big 12
No one doubts Will Grier’s production at college. After a 2018 season where he passed for 3,864 yards and had 37 touchdowns to just eight interceptions, Grier was named to the All-Big 12 Second-Team and finished fourth in the Heisman voting.
Many, however, doubt that his game will translate to the NFL. Standing at 6-foot-2, Grier is shorter than the desired height of a high-profile quarterback prospect. Additionally, his arm talent – strength and accuracy, specifically – has been questioned, and for some, cemented as sub-par based on his performance at the Senior Bowl. That’s not to say Grier doesn’t possess the arm strength or the accuracy to succeed in the NFL, but neither could be categorized as elite. Another concern is Grier’s tendency to be haphazard with the ball while trying to extend plays.
Despite his deficiencies, Grier does have several positive characteristics such as his mobility, his ability to get the ball out quick and his competitive spirit. Perhaps his best attributes are his ability to read the defensive pre-snap and make easy decisions based on those reads.
In the end, if given the opportunity to fix a few mechanical flaws and learn from an experienced quarterback, Grier could develop into a solid starting quarterback in the NFL.
