NFL Draft: Top 25 prospects from the Big 12
Ben Powers turned in a solid senior season for the Oklahoma Sooners and was awarded for his efforts a spot on the All-Big 12 First-Team. Powers followed the mold of fellow Sooner guard Dru Samia by dominating in pass-protection, but failed to grade as high in blocking for the run game. Pro Football Focus ranks Powers as the 42nd overall prospect in the upcoming draft.
Possessing average size for an NFL guard (6-foot-4, 313 pounds), Powers succeeds due to technique, awareness and balance according to ESPN’s status report. Jon Ledyard of The Draft Network evaluated Powers and shares that he “has some limitations that I’m not sure his technique can make up for, but I do think he’s savvy enough to project as a starter down the road, even if he isn’t ever a top player at his position.”
With that in mind, Powers would benefit from an impressive performance at the combine. Currently, he stands as a mid-round pick, but could build some buzz by demonstrating he has the athletic ability to effectively run-block and keep pace with the dynamic pass rushers in the NFL.
