2. The second tier of quarterbacks

Heading into the combine, the first tier of quarterbacks appears to be Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins and Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray, both of whom look to be locked into the first round in April. After that, however, it gets dicey with a number of talented, yet flawed, signal callers vying for first round consideration.

Missouri’s Drew Lock is the leader of that second tier coming into Indianapolis, but his place is far from locked in. He was impressive at the Senior Bowl and is likely to be a first round pick, but a strong showing at the combine could boost his stock toward the top half of the first round. With so many QB-needy teams this year, and the lack of better options, Lock and the others are likely to be over-drafted.

Behind Lock, Duke’s Daniel Jones could use a strong week at the combine to catapult himself into first round consideration. He had an up-and-down week in Mobile, but he might have been the most impressive quarterback during the actual Senior Bowl game. He has the prototypical size that NFL organizations covet.

West Virginia’s Will Grier has some limitations due to his lack of arm strength, but he had a prolific college career and did enough to earn a start in the Senior Bowl over an impressive cast of signal-callers. Grier isn’t likely to be in first round consideration, but he could solidify his spot as an early day-two pick if he has a good showing.

Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham had an excellent week in Mobile that culminated in a so-so showing in the actual game, but his stock is decidedly pointed upward heading into this week’s proceedings. Stidham throws an excellent deep-ball, and he could work his way into the early day-two range if he performs well this week.

NC State’s Ryan Finley looked pretty solid at the Senior Bowl as well, and boasts the size that has the attention of scouts. His lack of arm strength on tape is a little bizarre, though, given his size, and that will be a point of emphasis for him at the combine.

The second tier of signal-callers will have the attention of a lot of scouts in attendance, as they look to potentially uncover a diamond in the rough that could turn the fortunes of their franchise.
