Wisconsin Football: 5 potential transfer destinations for Alex Hornibrook
3. Florida State Seminoles
With Deondre Francois dismissed from the program, redshirt sophomore James Blackman is the only scholarship quarterback currently on the roster for Willie Taggart. The Seminoles landed Louisville transfer Jordan Travis, but he will have to sit out a year under the NCAA’s transfer rules unless he is granted a waiver for immediate eligibility.
Taggart and company struck out on the recruiting trail for a quarterback, and have so far been unable to land a graduate transfer to come in and compete with Blackman for the starting job in 2019. The Noles’ shambled offensive line could be a reason for that, with Francois running for his life throughout 2018 and their talented running back duo being unable to garner much running room.
It was a disastrous first season in Tallahassee for Taggart and he desperately needs a bounce-back season in 2019 or the heat will only intensify, potentially leading to his dismissal.
Blackman is a talented quarterback who has plenty of game experience. He started 12 games as a true freshman in 2017 after Francois suffered a knee injury in the season opener to Alabama. Blackman performed admirably, but lost the QB battle in the offseason to a healthy Francois, and was held to just four games in 2018 to preserve his redshirt season.
Hornibrook might not be a perfect fit for Taggart’s system, but he could provide the quality depth that is sorely lacking in Tallahassee. He has the big-game experience and the chops to push Blackman for the starting job in 2019 if he decided to head south to the ACC.
The ‘Noles are another program, however, that might not provide the easiest path to starting next season for the Wisconsin transfer that he might prefer. Florida State is in desperate need of depth at the position, though, so look for them to make a push for Hornibrook to try and add some experience to their quarterback room.
