2. Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Chris Ash is entering a make-or-break fourth season at Rutgers with a 7-29 overall record in his three seasons in Piscataway. The Scarlet Knights are coming off of a 1-11 2018 season after making some progress with four wins in 2017.

Rutgers is a tough job, and they have been toiling in cellar-dweller territory since Greg Schiano departed his post in 2011 for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

With Ash’s job likely on the line in 2019, he could look at the graduate transfer market to try and procure a difference maker who could help the Scarlet Knights make a push for a bowl game next season.

Rising sophomore Artur Sitkowski is the only signal caller on the roster with experience. He started as a true freshman and experienced severe growing pains, completing under 50-percent of his passes and throwing 18 interceptions to only four touchdowns.

Hornibrook’s 2018 struggles would still be a massive upgrade over what the Scarlet Knights had under center last season, and he’s a perfect fit for their pro-style offense.

There’s familiarity with Hornibrook and Rutgers already as the southpaw signal-caller took two unofficial visits to Piscataway during his 2015 recruiting process. His decision seemed to come down to Rutgers and Wisconsin, but he chose the Badgers and proceeded to put together a strong three seasons in Madison.

Now the road could be leading him back to the Scarlet Knights, where he would come in and immediately be the most talented and experienced quarterback on the roster – potentially serving as a job-saver for Ash.
