2019 NFL Combine: 5 Takeaways from Day 1 of workouts
1. Nick Bosa could be slipping
Ohio State’s Nick Bosa looked like the surest of surest things all season long, and he has been locked in as the presumptive No. 1 overall pick for quite some time. He was at the top of virtually every draft board coming into Indianapolis, but his injury past, particularly the core muscle injury that robbed him of almost all of his junior season with the Buckeyes, was concerning.
A new concern was unearthed on Friday in Indianapolis as his wingspan came in considerably shorter than his contemporaries at 77 and 7/8 inches. In comparison, along with Polite and Burns, Clemson’s Clelin Ferrell, Kentucky’s Josh Allen, Michigan’s Rashan Gary, and Mississippi State’s Montez Sweat, all had wingspans exceeding 80 inches in length.
Those players all look to be in the top-half of the first round, and could find an opening to move near the top of the board with Bosa coming in with shorter length than expected. The draft is deep with talent on the defensive line, and the concerns for the Ohio State product are starting to add up enough to put some doubt into whether or not he will be the No. 1 pick April.
Bosa has too much potential to fall far, but he’ll need to really pop in his on the field testing on Saturday to regain some traction and avoid somewhat of a drop down draft boards. At this point, it might not be a lock that Bosa ends up in the Top-5, which is a dramatic change from the status-quo heading into the week.
I expect Bosa to have the strong day he needs to have on Saturday, but there’s some doubt surrounding him now that could open up the door for another player or two to jump him by the time the draft rolls around.
