NFL Draft: Top 10 small school prospects
By John Scimeca
6. Chandler Burks, ATH, Kennesaw State
Burks’ impressive career as starting quarterback at Kennesaw State includes 3,638 passing yards, 33 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Include that he has rushed for 2,813 yards and 56 touchdowns over those same four seasons, and you’ve got one intriguing prospect.
For a program that is only in its fourth season, the Owls have pieced together some astounding results. Both 2017 and 2018 ended with quarterfinal appearances in the FCS Playoffs. The Owls nearly defeated FBS Georgia State (a 24-20 loss) and have Georgia Tech scheduled for 2021. The Owls finished last year with an 11-2 record and a No. 5 FCS ranking.
The obvious question is, how would Burks’ game translate to the NFL? Though Burks does not go out on many pass routes, one example of his usage could be the New Orleans Saints’ deployment of former BYU quarterback Taysom Hill as a wildcat quarterback, a pass-catcher, and a special teams dynamo.
Here is Kennesaw State’s display of Burks winning the FCS National Performer of the Year Award last week:
