Quarterbacks

Starting quarterback: Ian Book
Backup: Phil Jurkovec

There is very little quarterback controversy to speak of in 2019 when compared to the intensity of the controversy between former quarterback Brandon Wimbush and current starter Ian Book heading into spring practices last season. Instead, the Irish will progress through the spring and summer knowing full-well who will start at quarterback in Week 1.

Book, who claimed the starting job from Wimbush merely weeks into the 2018 season, will get another shot at starting quarterback following a bland performance in the Irish’s season finale against Clemson. Considering Clemson gave even Tua Tagovailoa a hard time, it’s fair to say the Irish were outmatched in more than just one category that day.

After all, Book’s regular season was nearly flawless as he completed just under 70 percent of his passes for 2,628 yards and 19 touchdowns to only seven interceptions. After accounting for his 280 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, Irish fans can once more take pride in their quarterback situation.

Behind Book is sophomore Phil Jurkovec, a dual-threat quarterback once perceived as the program’s savior prior to Book’s emergence. While Jurkovec is very talented and could become the bona fide starter in just one year, expectations should be tempered for as long as Book and his high-powered offense remain in town.
