2019 NFL Draft: 10 players trending up after NFL Combine
Texas A&M’s Erik McCoy was among a trio of interior offensive linemen who put on a show in Indianapolis on the first day of on-field drills, and the former Aggie may have been the most impressive of the group.
McCoy led all offensive linemen with a blistering 4.89 40-yard dash despite weighing in at over 300 pounds. He also put up 29 reps on the bench press and topped 30 inches with his vertical jump. The Texas A&M product is an impressive athlete, and solidified his spot as one of the best interior linemen in this draft class.
McCoy’s athleticism backed up what was obvious on tape. He moves quickly in-and-out of breaks and is a mauler in the running game. His technique needs refinement in pass protection, but teams are going to take him because of his run-blocking prowess and his tremendous upside.
He’s adept at getting to the second level quickly and taking on linebackers to spring runners down the field. He has powerful hands that make it tough for defenders to shed him once he is able to get to them. He played both guard and center during his career in College Station, and figures to be able to play any of the spots along the interior in the NFL.
McCoy had a strong enough showing in Indianapolis that he could threaten for a late first round selection. In the very least, he’s likely to find himself as a solid second round pick, but there’s plenty of teams late in the first round who could be enamored enough with McCoy to pull the trigger at the end of day one.
