Perhaps the combine’s biggest freak was Ole Miss wide receiver D.K. Metcalf. It was long thought that Metcalf would put up ridiculous numbers in Indianapolis, but I don’t think anyone quite expected what unfolded at Lucas Oil Stadium.

At 6-foot-3 and 228 pounds, Metcalf ran a 4.33 40-yard dash, which was the fastest recording time in the history of the combine for a player his size. He hit 40.5 inches on his vertical jump, and put up 27 reps on the bench press. It was an overall inhumane performance for the Rebels product.

His teammate A.J. Brown took the headlines in college, but many pundits have touted Metcalf as the superior NFL product for some time. There’s some concern, however, because Metcalf’s numbers during his time at Ole Miss never matched his athletic ability.

That’s not completely fair to him, though, because he was on pace for a really strong 2018 season until a neck injury cost him the remainder of the season. He flashed his play-making ability in the early going of the season, particularly against Alabama when he burned Saivion Smith for a 75-yard touchdown on the game’s first offensive snap.

Metcalf looked like the top wide receiver in this class coming into the combine, and his performance in Indy confirmed that thought. He’s the top player at his position this year, the only question now is how highly he will be picked. It’s a deep class of receivers, but my money remains on the Bills to grab him with the ninth pick.
