1. Can someone from bottom become a contender?

Among the rest of the ACC sits a group of teams itching to play the role of spoiler and become a contender in the conference. Nobody, though, might have a better shot than North Carolina at doing that.

The Tar Heels looked to their past to head into the future, bringing former head coach Mack Brown out of retirement. Brown, who will have turned 68 years old by the time the season starts, was the head coach at UNC from 1988-97 before heading to Texas when he had his most success.

Can Brown resurrect the past? After going just 2-20 in his first two years with the Tar Heels, Brown had the team ranked in the AP Top 25 every week from October 1992 through the start of the 1995 season. They were ranked in the Top 10 twice.

Georgia Tech also has a new face, as Paul Johnson and his triple option offense have headed off into the sunset with Geoff Collins working to change everything around the program. Louisville also made a coaching change, firing Bobby Petrino and hiring Appalachian State’s Scott Satterfield, who was regarded as one of the top coaches in the Group of Five schools.
