2019 NFL Mock Draft: Odell Beckham trade throws first round into chaos
Green Bay’s top need has long been thought to be a pass rusher, but they’ve addressed that in free agency. The Packers were atypically aggressive in this free agent class, inking Za’Darius Smith and Preston Smith to big contracts to aid their flailing pass rush. The time to spend is now as they look to take advantage of the last few years of their Super Bowl window with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback.
With the additions off the edge, the Packers can now focus on surrounding Rodgers with more receiving talent and shoring up his protection up front. Iowa’s T.J. Hockenson could check both boxes with his ability as a blocker and a receiver; he’s the complete package as a tight end and should make an immediate impact in the NFL.
Green Bay signed Marcedes Lewis and still have Jimmy Graham, but it’s not a foregone conclusion that either are on the roster by the start of next season. Graham seems to have lost a step, and was mostly a disappointment in his first season with the Packers, catching only two touchdown passes.
Hockenson is a do-it-all type of player who can line up with his hand in the dirt or split out wide. He’s a matchup problem with his size and strength, and he boasts an outstanding catch radius. He would be an excellent fit alongside Rodgers at Lambeau.
The Packers are armed with a pair of first round picks to try and bolster their roster as they look to get back to the playoffs after a now two-year absence. They’ll take a long look at offensive line with this pick as well, with Alabama’s Jonah Williams and Oklahoma’s Cody Ford being intriguing here, but Hockenson is too talented and tempting here, and they should be able to add a quality offensive lineman with their second pick of the first round.
