2019 NFL Mock Draft: Odell Beckham trade throws first round into chaos
The Dolphins’ rebuild is underway after they traded Ryan Tannehill to the Titans and have watched some of their top free agents walk away. Miami is in need of a quarterback, which could cause them to give a long look at Drew Lock, or potentially end the slide for Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins if he gets past the Giants, but their plan seems to revolve around the 2020 class for a quarterback. Look for them to find a place-holder at the position for 2019, in hopes of bottoming out in the soon-to-be “tank for Tua” sweepstakes.
(Note: after this writing, the Dolphins found that placeholder, signing Ryan Fitzpatrick to a deal, and now focusing their full attention on Tagovailoa)
In the meantime, to prepare for a potential franchise quarterback to join the fray in 2020, they’ll want to look at shoring up his protection on the offensive line. If they are as enamored with Tua Tagovailoa as they seem to be, what better way to potentially prepare for his arrival than to draft the man that protected Tua last season in Tuscaloosa?
Alabama’s Jonah Williams has drawn a lot of criticism in the pre-draft process due to his shorter than prototypical arm-length and the subsequent worries that he may need to kick inside to guard at the next level. I think Williams is a tackle through and through, though he certainly could shift inside to guard if called upon to do so.
Williams was a three-year starter for the Crimson Tide at right and left tackle, and he has the ability to be a Pro Bowl talent at any of the positions up front. He’s got excellent technique and footwork, and is an absolute demon when run blocking down the field.
Miami gave up the fifth most sacks and ranked 18th in the NFL in rushing offense a year ago; upgrades on the offensive line are needed, and Williams would provide an instant upgrade up front for Miami, shoring up their offensive line as they put the pieces together around the eventual franchise quarterback that they covet.
